Teaching children is a great way to spend one’s life. I feel grateful to have a job working with children. They brighten my days, keep life interesting, and challenge me to grow. I have been working and volunteering at Short Avenue for 23 years. I volunteered in my sons’ classrooms; then, was hired as a yard and supervision aide for two years. After that, I was the school librarian for two years. I taught fifth grade for one year, and have been teaching fourth grade for 17 years. It is a blessing to do something for a long time; not only to have a job (!), but to get to know the people and the work pretty well, also.
In addition to teaching, I continue to dance. I’ve traveled to Brazil, Turkey, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland; and to various places in the United States to perform, choreograph, teach dance, and direct a dance company. I love to spend time at my church and sing with our women’s worship team. I am married to the talented Mr. Shigekawa; and I have two grown sons, for whom I am very thankful. I also have fun watching the Dodgers, Lakers, and Kings!
